Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
A new support group for older adults
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is a new support group being offered by Senior Services designed specifically for older adults in Forsyth County, aged 55 and over who provide kinship care, or in other words, are raising a minor relative.
This support group aims to provide participants an opportunity to discuss the challenges and joys of kinship care in a safe and supportive environment. We know that it can be incredibly rewarding to raise grandchildren, but it can also be difficult. By coming together and supporting one another, we hope that participants will find strength and encouragement in the face of those challenges.
One of the unique features of this support group is the opportunity to engage with experts who will be invited to attend meetings. They will provide attendees with new strategies and resources, as well as, answer questions and provide guidance on a wide range of topics including legal aid, custody options, financial resources, Social Security, opportunities for recreation and respite care, behavioral health for your loved one, and medical resources. There will also be opportunities for outings and get-togethers as a group.
If you or someone you know might benefit from this group, we encourage you to consider joining Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.
Meetings are every third Wednesday beginning on January 18, 2023, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Senior Services, 2895 Shorefair Drive. Lunch will be provided.
RSVP is required by January 13, 2023. Contact Frandee Nichols, kinship care coordinator, at 336-721-6952 or fnichols@seniorservicesinc.org to learn more or to RSVP.
The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group is funded by an award from the American Rescue Plan Act-Family Caregiver Support Program.
