Art is not merely decoration; it is a vital thread in the fabric of our lives. It gives meaning to our experiences and deepens our understanding of the world around us. Public art invites reflection, sparks dialogue on pressing social issues, and helps shape the cultural identity of communities. The appreciation and creation of art can benefit individuals of all ages, nurturing creativity and critical thinking in children while providing cognitive stimulation and a sense of purpose for seniors.

The belief in the power of creativity and arts to pass on traditions and celebrate cultures improves our quality of life and overall well-being and inspired the creation of the Senior Services Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, affectionately known as the Generations Center. Since its opening a year ago, this 62,500-square-foot community center has become a vibrant hub for individuals of all ages to engage in health, wellness, and, of course, art.

A Welcoming Canvas

The moment you approach the 30th Street entrance of the Generations Center, you are greeted by “Together Through the Ages,” a stunning 42-foot mural that spans the wall outside the main entrance. Created by artist Raman Bhardwaj, this bright and abstract piece showcases people from diverse backgrounds and ages engaged in various activities, embodying the spirit of intergenerational interaction. Bhardwaj describes the mural as a reflection of the center’s mission: “It sets the tone of what is happening inside. Just walking or driving around, you look at this mural and you know what this place is about.”

The mural serves not only as an artistic statement but also as a landmark, inviting everyone including seniors, children, and families—to see themselves reflected in the vibrant activities depicted.

A Tapestry of Creativity

The mural is just one example of the creative works that adorn the Generations Center. Inside and out, six talented artists have left their marks, each piece a testament to the center’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Visitors can explore various artworks that celebrate the shared meaning of community:

Nick Bragg’s “Celebration”: This floral painting illustrates a multitude of colors and plant types, capturing the essence of different generations flourishing together.
“Connecting the Generations”: Wynn Tanner’s multi-media mosaic spanning four feet by 14 feet, visually depicts the connections formed between individuals of all ages.
“Blooming Together”: A striking sculpture by Derrick Monk and Duncan Lewis, will stand proudly outside the east side of the building near the Williams Adult Day Center entrance and symbolize growth and renewal.
Issis Kelly’s mural, titled, “From Here and From There”, nestled inside the Hispanic League’s office, adds yet another layer of cultural richness. Visually weaving the journeys and cultures of Hispanic and Latin immigrants between their current home in North Carolina and their ancestral lands.

In addition to these amazing pieces, visitors will also see a number of large photo displays depicting the rich history of the local neighborhood as well as the full diversity of age and culture that makes Forsyth County such a wonderful place to live.

A Space for Connection

As T. Lee Covington, President and CEO of Senior Services, explains, “The arts are an integral part of what’s happening here at the Generations Center; that was intentional from the very beginning.” From the moment you drive in, you are enveloped in beauty—starting with the welcoming mural at the entrance and continuing with the creative elements that shape the building’s design.

Above all, the Generations Center is a place where individuals feel welcomed. The blend of art and community fosters an environment where intergenerational connections can flourish, both in planned activities and organic interactions.

Art transforms spaces and lives, and at the Generations Center, it is clear that creativity is not just an accessory but an essential component of community life. As we embrace the stories told through these artworks, we are reminded of the beauty that diversity brings to our shared experience, and the enduring power of art to inspire and unite us all.
